I haven’t read enough children’s books to Runner Bean but I’ve discovered there’s lots of shit out there.
My mum pointed out the appalling grammar of ‘I love you as blue as the sky’ (I love you as much as the sky is blue). I got bored three pages into the seemingly never ending Wonderful Adventures of Nils. However, we’ve found a few goodies.
Today’s book going in the pile to keep is Hairy Maclary and Zachary Quack by Lynley Dodd.
It’s beautifully playful through it’s fluid rhyme and vocabulary (frolic, skedaddled). The poetic layout keeps a good pace and it allows you to play with sounds through the almost onomatopoeic words,
Into the water
he flew with a
S M A C K
I got to the end and wanted to start again.
